“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering" -Colossians 3:12
To put on implies to clothe one’s self or to sink into one’s clothes. To sink is to become deeply absorbed or to become engulfed. As the elect of God, we are picked out and chosen by God. Just as parents expect their children to behave a certain way, God expects His children to behave a certain way. Not only are we expected to act in a holy and loving manner, there are few other characteristics He expects us to obtain and maintain.
Bowels of mercies:
The bowels were regarded as the seat of the more violent passions, such as anger and love. But, by the Hebrews were regarded as the center of the tenderer affections, especially kindness, benevolence, compassion. Hence our heart (bowels) is where compassion resides.
Kindness:
This implies moral goodness, integrity and benignity. Integrity implies faithfulness to high moral standards and a devotion to telling the truth. Benignity implies having a gentle disposition. It is someone who does not have a cancerous, harmful attitude but possesses a kind and gentle attitude.
Humbleness of mind:
This implies having a humble opinion about one’s self. It is having modest and humble attitudes. Your mind is free from any unholy or indecent thoughts. And, one does not think of themselves more highly than others. It is also not having an attitude that seeks the inappropriate attention of others.
Meekness:
This is the absence of any feelings of being better than others. This must be important because it is something that is repeated. It is having a humbleness and modesty of mind.
Longsuffering:
This implies patience, endurance, constancy, steadfastness, perseverance. Patience is the capacity to endure what is difficult or disagreeable without complaining. Endurance is the staying power to make it through a situation. Constancy is the state of continuing without change. Steadfastness is being firmly fixed in place, immovable. Perseverance is to persist in a state in spite of counterinfluences, opposition or discouragement.
Our goal is to become like Him. He calls us to be holy just as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16). Holiness is conforming to the will and nature of God. So, we need to absorb these characteristics in our life. Allow them to engulf us.
