Proverbs 22:1 (KJV), says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
The NIV says, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”
The Message translation says it this way, “A sterling reputation is better than striking it rich; a gracious spirit is better than money in the bank.”
No matter which translation you read, the point to get across is that having and maintaining a good reputation is very valuable. And, having a favorable or gracious spirit is priceless.
A sterling reputation…I like that description. Sterling Silver has many uses. But one thing is for sure, it holds its value. Our reputation needs to hold its value. Your reputation is the overall quality or character as seen or judged by people in general. That is why it is important to have a gracious spirit.
I looked up the word gracious in the Merriam-Webster and one of the definitions was Godly. Titus 2:11-12 (NIV) says, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.” Living a Godly and holy lifestyle in this world is the only way that we can begin to make a difference.
Someone can have all the money in the bank and have everything they could ever need or want…but without a good reputation and Godly spirit it is worth nothing. Having this characteristics are worth more than all the silver and gold in the world.
Lord, help us to strive to be more like you. Help us to maintain a good reputation by having a Godly spirit. Help us to be holy as you are holy….
