A classic example is this fern I had (notice I said had) outside in a big iron pot. It was thriving and growing so beautiful until a colony of ants decided to move in. I tried to get rid of the ants before they killed my fern, but my efforts did not help my poor fern. The beautiful greenery died because the roots died.
The are things that can sneak into our lives and kill the roots of our life. The result will be that we will cease to bear fruit and eventually die spiritually. So, it is very important to keep those "spiritual parasites" away from the roots of our life. We want to produce fruit and thrive in the sunlight of Jesus. That should be our ultimate goal. And, just as perennials spread and come back every year...our fruit can be shared and make a difference in the lives around us time and time again. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the kind of fruit we bear when we are rooted in faith: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.
So put your faith and trust in the One who created the world, the One with whom ALL things are possible, the One who knew you while you were still your mother's womb, the One who IS in control and will strengthen, help and uphold you. Then the roots of your life will grow deep and strong and you will produce fruit and thrive for His glory!
