With Jack out of town for a couple a days for work, I thought that I would stay busy by working on my flower garden. Now, I have never had much of a "green thumb"...but I have been saying that I wanted to have a pretty little garden area out my back door. Jack had tilled the area for me quite some time ago, but he mentioned that it needed to be re-tilled. So in the sprinkling rain this morning I got the tiller out and tilled about a 15'X25' area (give or take a few inches). I dug up my gladiolas and replanted them to a different area. Then I planted a couple more rose bushes next to my existing one. I felt a great sense of accomplishment as I looked out over my garden area. It had looked like just a piece of tilled up dirt and now it was beginning to take shape into a nice flower garden.
After a little while, It started getting too wet out to continue to plant the jasmine ground covering. So, I repositioned my shepherd's hook (with a bird feeder hanging from it), and my other yard ornaments. Not long after I went inside, the birds returned to get some bird seed and look for worms in the freshly tilled ground. That is one thing I love about our home and yard. We live on a little over 3 acres in the city We have creek on the back half of the property with lots of trees. We have cardinals, sparrows, blue jays, martins and many other kinds of birds that live back in the creek area. Of course then there are the squirrels, racoons, possums, coyotes and don't forget the bobcat. I feel so close to God when I look out over the trees and see all the birds and critters. I always reminds me of the scripture in Luke 12:6-7 that mentions that the sparrows are not forgotten by God...and we are worth more than many sparrows.
During all that tilling, digging and planting, the kids and I took a "looking for worms" break. I picked one up and let Jackson hold one. (Kalynn would not touch it.) He giggled saying that it tickled. He kept saying "Mommy, let's find another one!". Kalynn finally "got into the mood"...but only to dig a hole for Jackson to look for worms. It all reminded me of when I used to dig for worms for my grandpa when I was 5. I would put them in a pail with dirt so that he could go fishing.
I guess all my rambling on here is just to say that making memories for yourself and your children is important. To some it may not mean much, but to my kids, helping Mommy in the garden, playing in the yard in the sprinkling rain and digging for worms will be something that they will remember for a lifetime. And as my children grow and "blossom" into who God wants them to be...I hope we have many more sprinkling rainy April days to usher in the May flowers.
