Ought. This was a spelling word for one of my kiddos the other day. Though I have always been a good speller, for the most part, this is a word that I always have to think about before I spell it. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, ought is used to express obligation, advisability, natural expectation or logical consequence. I guess the word came to my mind this morning when I started to sing this chorus: "Make me what I ought to be. Help me to be more like thee. Bid me come up higher 'til thy face I see. Make me what I ought to be." Then I decided to look up the word on biblestudytools.com. I found that the word ought is used 94 times in the bible. But, I wanted to share a few of the scriptures that I found.
Luke 18:1, "...that men ought always to pray, and not to faint."
Acts 5:29, "Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said , We ought to obey God rather than men."
Romans 8:26, "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought : but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Romans 12:3, "For I say , through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith."
Romans 15:1, "We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves."
2 Corinthians 2:7, "So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow."
Colossians 4:6, "Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man."
1 Thessalonians 4:1, "Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more."
Hebrews 2:1, "Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard , lest at any time we should let them slip."
James 3:10, "Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be."
2 Peter 3:11, "Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved , what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness."
1 John 4:11, "Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another."
