Psalm 46:1 (NASB), “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.”
The word “trouble” in this verse means trouble, distress or oppression. But I found it interesting that it also comes from the word that means "hard pebble”.
Have you even been walking and you get a pebble in your shoe? No matter how hard you try to ignore that pebble, it just seems that the pebble gets bigger and more annoying. You stop, take your shoe off, get the pebble out, then you put your shoe back on and start walking again. Once again, you can walk peacefully and in comfort.
When trials, distress and oppression comes our way, it is much the same way as that stubborn pebble in our shoe. They seem to become overwhelming and bothersome. But, only if we don’t do something about them.
Psalm 46:1 says that God is our refuge and strength. A very present help in the trials, distress and oppression we face.
He is our refuge: when we put our confidence and trust in God, when trouble comes our way, we can flee to Him for protection from the storms of life. He is the shelter from the dangers that try to torment our hearts and minds.
He is our strength: He can gives us the physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual strength we need for any given situation. He can help us to stand firm and strong on the Word of God, our road map on this journey in life.
He is a very present help: He is our exceedingly, abundance and great help or assistance. We can find or attain His help as any time. We do not have to take a number and wait in line. He is readily and immediately available at any time.
So, do you have a hard pebble in the “shoe of your life”? Flee to the one who can be the strength you need and who can help you with His abundant and great power. There is nothing that is too hard for Him. And, all it takes is a little bit of faith to move that pebble that seemingly is a "mountain”.
