"Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." Colossians 3:2
A song that comes to mind is "Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of this earth will grow strangely dim. In the light of His glory and grace"
The Merriam-Webster states that things can be a situation, circumstance, possession or accomplishment. There is definite difference between heavenly things and earthly things. The sort of things we focus our attention on will affect every area of our life. Just as easily as bread and water can become toast and tea...any situation, circumstance, possession or accomplishment can be seen in a more spiritual sense.
Situations & Circumstances: 2 Corinthians 9:8 (NIV) says, "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work". No matter how your day seems to be going, you can be assured that He SHALL provide all your needs. He is ABLE to make grace very prevalent in your life. In Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV) it says, "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end". Our humans mind could not possibly fathom all of His greatness. What blessings we have experienced in our lifetime is just a portion of what He is capable of doing for us! ALL things work together for good, to them that love Him...So, when the situation or circumstance you are facing seems to overwhelm you, look to Him...He will turn it all around in due time.
Possessions & Accomplishments: These things can easily come between you and God if you take your eyes off of Him. The possessions and accomplishments in our life can become a blessing or a curse...it depends on whether or not we serve Him as our God or allow those things to be our god. Deuteronomy 11:26-28 says, "Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day: And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known".
In Revelation 21:23 it says, "And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof". When you turn your eyes to Him and look into His face, His glory...His greatness, preeminence & grace...will outshine any situation, circumstance, possession or accomplishment that threatens to detour you away from His will for your life.
So, set your mind on Godly things...transplant yourself into His Word...Be determined to hold on to Him until the end...let your focus be fixed on Him.
