There is an old chorus that says, "Just wanted to tell you, I'm thankful for all that you have done. For the stars and the moonlight. And the setting sun. And when my work on earth is through, I'm going home to be with you. Just wanted to tell you, I'm thankful that's all". Today, the subject of my thankfulness is my yard.
My garden, which is still "in-the-making", is something that I am very thankful for...except for the weeds. With all the rain we have had, the weeds are growing pretty fast, but slowly my "dream garden" is taking shape. We have decided tp change up a bit and make an area for the picnic table in the midst of the flowers, plants and rose bushes. To some it may not look like much, but in my mind's eye, I see it developing every time I look out the back windows or door.
I finally finished moving some gladiolas from out by the creek to my "critter corner" the other day. Jack's Granny had planted the gladiolas years ago when she was living in this house. So, I decided to transplant them to a little corner of some landscaping we are working on that I call my "critter corner". This little corner has bird feeders and some lawn ornaments. I have robins, cardinals, blue jays, sparrows, squirrels, bunnies and many other birds visit this corner throughout the day and night. Sometime the kids and I will sit out on my cedar bench on the patio and watch the birds and then the squirrels as they climb my shepherd's hook and hang upside down to eat the seeds from the bird feeder. Speaking of squirrels, Jack was shooting his paint ball gun out in the yard the other day at a tree and pegged a squirrel! So, we had one squirrel that had a bright orange splot on his back. It was funny. But I did feel sorry for the little guy...that had to of hurt.
The kids and I recently transplanted 40+ asian jasmine plants from the back yard to the front yard. That was fun for the kids. They watered each plant after I replanted it. Of course we were all muddy by the time it was over, but it was fun to work together. Then I moved the patio swing under a tree in the front yard. It looks so peaceful out there now. Well, except for the traffic on the Murphy Road. But it serves the purpose I intended it to...a place to sit and relax.
Several weeks ago we had transplanted some dasies, ivy and lamb's ears from Grandma Patsy's garden. The daisies did well and the ivy looks good too. But, the lamb's ears started to die once we planted them. Then, the other day though I noticed that the roots must have started growing because new plants have grow up. I was so excited. Have you ever felt the leaves of the lamb's ear plant? They feel exactly like lamb's ears! I guess I like them so much because they are such a unique plant.
I am so thankful for the beautiful yard with which we have been blessed. And also for the "critters" God has allowed us to feed and enjoy. I love to see the excitment in the kids' eyes when the lightning bugs come out at night. Oh, and Jack saw a BIG racoon the other night out by the peach tree getting the ones that had fallen. And, a couple of weeks ago we saw the bobcat walking along the tree line by the creek in the early evening. Although I may not like some of these creatures up close and personal, I am thankful for the opportunity to see the beauty in God's creations...from the tallest tree down to the smallest lightning bug.
